It’s been an unprecedented year so far. The world has changed dramatically in just a few months due to the coronavirus pandemic. Right now, most of us are focused on caring for our families and keeping loved ones safe and healthy.
During this time, we are even more grateful that because of your support, many orphaned and vulnerable children around the world are in loving families. Thanks to you, more children are receiving the love, support, and care of a family in these uncertain times.
We are in constant communication with our partners and teams in Mexico and Honduras. We will keep this page updated with the latest information regarding what’s happening in each of The Hope Effect’s locations.
In Hermosillo, Sonora, where we recently received government approval to pioneer family-style care, the government has extended the stay-at-home order until August 2020. Non-essential services have been suspended, large gatherings have been cancelled, and the governor has told everyone to stay home as much as possible.
The cancellation of group events limits our ability to recruit new families to provide care for children. However, we had a great response from previous recruitment events, and we recently presented the first four families to the government for review. We look forward to continuing the approval process for those families when the government reopens.
In the meantime, we are bringing hope whenever and wherever we can! In both Hermosillo and San Luis Río Colorado (our other location in Sonora). we are helping families in need by providing groceries and essential supplies.
We’re partnering with the amazing people at DIF Sonora and DIF San Luis Río Colorado to deliver bags of groceries to help keep families together in this time of crisis. Every child deserves to be at home with their family…and we want to make this a reality! In fact, during the month of May, your generous donations helped more than 200 children stay out of government orphanages and where they belong…in their families. Read more about this important work here.
In addition, our staff in Hermosillo recently discussed family-style care on a local radio station. Since then, even more families have contacted us for information. We continue to be grateful for the growing movement in Hermosillo.
Santa Rosa, Honduras
The borders of Honduras are closed until further notice. In addition, the government has implemented a strict curfew that severely limits the movement of individuals within the country.
Our partners in Santa Rosa have a bit more freedom, as they fall into an exception category for organizations caring for vulnerable children. But with no public transportation available, staff members and families caring for children have limited options for getting where they need to go.
At this time, The Hope Effect and our partners are focused on ensuring children and families are receiving the food, supplies, and care they need.
In Chihuahua, Mexico, the number of coronavirus cases continues to increase, and we are monitoring the situation. Health officials are urging Chihuahua residents to stay home and practice social distancing to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
The Hope Effect and our partners are following the guidance of medical professionals. We have converted in-person meetings to virtual meetings, and we are instructing families to take precautions and follow medical recommendations. We are continuing to monitor the situation and supporting families as we discover their critical needs.
Overall, the work in Chihuahua continues. And we are so grateful that because of your support we are still able to help orphaned and vulnerable children find loving families during these challenging times.
Ultimately, our work continues and our mission remains the same. In every location (including the United States), we are keeping our staff and their families safe while keeping our eyes on the ultimate goal of changing the way the world cares for orphans.
Financially, we are in a stable position, as we always operate lean and aim to be extremely responsible with our donors’ gifts. In addition, we are ensuring the financial stability of the work in each of our locations.
We’ll keep you updated as the situations in each of our locations continue to develop. We are so thankful for your support and partnership. You are changing lives…and you are changing the way the world cares for orphans.
