Holding Onto Hope: Carmen’s Story

Carmen and her sisters’ story is one of strength, resilience, and hope.
Carmen was just 13 years old when her life changed completely. She had moved to Monterrey from Tabasco with her mother, her father, and her younger sisters in search of a better future. For a time, their family began to build a sense of stability. Then, everything changed.
In a moment marked by fear and uncertainty, Carmen made a courageous decision. She spoke up and asked for help.
Her father, the person who was meant to protect her, attempted to abuse her while her mother was at work. Carmen found the courage to tell the truth. Because of her bravery, her mother was able to act quickly, ensure her safety, and notify the authorities. Carmen’s voice not only protected her, but also her sisters.
But the journey toward healing was only beginning.
A Long Road to Healing
Due to the severity of the situation, Carmen and her sisters were placed in a children’s home, which is another term for an orphanage, as a protective measure. For Carmen, this meant navigating deep emotional pain while adjusting to an unfamiliar environment. At the same time, she stepped into a protective role for her younger sisters.
Her sisters, still very young, struggled to understand why they could no longer be with their mother. In the midst of that confusion, Carmen became a steady presence for them. She comforted them, cared for them, and did her best to create a sense of safety while carrying her own grief.
For five years, the sisters lived in the orphanage, holding onto hope that one day they would be together again. During that time, Carmen began the difficult but important work of healing. With guidance and support, she started to process her experiences and rebuild her sense of identity.
Meanwhile, Carmen’s mother began a long and demanding journey to bring her daughters home. The situation was complex, and reunification required time, stability, and trust. Starting over in a new city without a support network, she worked tirelessly to meet every requirement set before her. She secured stable employment, established a safe and suitable home, and committed to her own personal and emotional growth so she could provide a healthy environment for her children. She also followed through with the legal process, and the girls’ father was ultimately held accountable.
Throughout it all, Carmen’s mother remained present in her daughters’ lives. Through regular visits and family interactions, she nurtured and rebuilt the bond that had been strained by separation. Her consistency and perseverance became the foundation for what would come next.
A Family Reunited
After years of effort, healing, and unwavering love, the day finally came.
Because of the support surrounding them, Carmen and her sisters were able to return home.
Their reunification marked more than a physical return. It was the beginning of a new chapter, one defined by safety, stability, and the opportunity to move forward together as a family.
Today, Carmen is a young woman who looks to the future with determination. She continues to grow, make choices that prioritize her well-being, and pursue her education and goals. Her past is part of her story, but it does not define who she is becoming.
Her younger sisters are also thriving in a home that is now safe, stable, and filled with opportunity.
With the support of the Strong Families program, Carmen, her sisters, and their mother are building a new foundation rooted in trust, care, and love. Carmen’s story is a reminder that even in the hardest seasons, hope can endure. Because of you, more children like Carmen can grow up in the safety of a family and the promise of a different future.
