Siblings Reunited in Safety and Belonging: Theo’s Story

Theo is just five years old, but he has already experienced more instability than most children his age should ever face.

He grew up with his parents and siblings in Mae Sot, Thailand. But after the loss of his mother, his family began to fracture. His older siblings were voluntarily placed in foster care, but Theo’s father decided to keep him.

Over time, it became clear that his father was struggling with alcohol abuse and was unable to provide consistent care. Theo’s situation became increasingly unsafe, marked by neglect and, at times, being forced to sleep outside.

While his siblings began to stabilize in a safe home, Theo remained separated, vulnerable and alone.

A Path Forward

Thankfully, our partner organization in Mae Sot, Global Child Advocates, learned of Theo’s situation.

Through your support, we are working with GCA to make sure that even in the most complex situations, children can remain in safe, loving families. Whether through foster care or kinship care, more children in Mae Sot have the opportunity to thrive in a family.

When GCA’s team met Theo, they prioritized his safety and began working directly with his father to address the dangers at home. It was clear that although Theo’s father loved him, his home was not a safe environment for him. The team clearly communicated the impact of the situation on Theo and urged that Theo be moved somewhere safe.

Ultimately, his father agreed to place Theo with his siblings in foster care, ensuring he could be in a safe and stable environment while his father sought help for his alcoholism.

That moment changed everything.

Reunited in Safety

Theo was welcomed into the same foster home where his siblings were already being cared for, a place where he is now safe, valued, and loved. The reunion of the siblings brought immediate emotional relief. For the first time in a long time, they are together again.

In an additional act of support, the local school made an exception to enroll Theo, even after the deadline had passed, ensuring he could begin building a future alongside his newfound stability.

Today, Theo is no longer surviving alone. He is part of a family again. GCA continues to walk closely with this foster family, providing support and ensuring the children’s long-term wellbeing.

Clear boundaries have also been established with their father, allowing for connection when safe, while always prioritizing the children’s protection.

This is the power of family-based care, not just removing a child from harm, but restoring them to relationship, safety, and belonging. And it is made possible because of you.
