THIS GIVINGTUESDAY,
build a lasting movement of family care
Ten years ago, The Hope Effect was founded on a simple conviction: children belong in families, not institutions.
Over the past decade, we’ve learned that children don’t have to wait years for the safety and belonging of a family. By building family-based care systems alongside local governments, children are reaching families sooner while every dollar goes further.
This GivingTuesday, December 1, we invite you to help more orphaned and vulnerable children experience the love of family. Every gift will be matched, up to $175,000. That means your gift, and your impact, will be doubled!
“I say often that we are planting trees, not vegetable gardens. Vegetable gardens give an immediate reward, resulting in a harvest in the near future. Trees take years, even decades, but provide fruit and shade for generations.”
Ten years ago we believed family was better. We spent a decade proving it. Now we are building systems, shaping policy, and changing how governments and communities think about family.
This year, an organization that ran an orphanage in Oaxaca for more than fifty years signed an agreement with their state government to run a foster care program instead. That is what a better way looks like when it spreads.
What Your Gift Does
Every GivingTuesday gift is matched, so each of these makes twice the impact.
Helps prepare a family to welcome a child into their home and hearts.
Provides a month of therapeutic support for a child as they settle into a family.
Carries one child's legal path out of an institution and into a permanent family.
Trains government leaders pioneering family-based care.
What healing looks like
Benjamín's story didn't start in a family. It began in prison. His mother was incarcerated, and he spent the early part of his life never knowing the safety of a home or the love of a family.
In many parts of the world, Benjamín would have grown up in an orphanage, with an uncertain future. But thankfully, there was a better way.
When Benjamín was 19 months old, he was welcomed into the loving arms of a foster family. There, he began to thrive…and his life changed forever.
A BETTER WAY, MEASURED.
An orphanage in Mexico that has served children for more than fifty years shared its data with us.
Here is what a decade of family-based care looks like beside it.
The impact, per dollar
Sooner to a permanent family
Of children reach a permanent family
| Orphanage | The Hope Effect care model | |
|---|---|---|
| Where a child grows up | Orphanage | Foster family |
| Time waiting for a family | 6 years | 2 years |
| Cost of care, per day | $47 | $13 |
| Total cost per child | $102,930 | $9,490 |
| Children who reach a permanent family | Fewer than 1% | 99% |
These findings compare one orphanage in Oaxaca, Mexico with The Hope Effect's family-based care programs in Mexico.
Children thrive in families, not institutions. The vast majority of children in The Hope Effect's care achieve permanency within two years, giving them the stability and belonging every child deserves.
